Travel Insurance for Ontario Residents: What to Check Before You Go

Questions Ontario travellers should ask about emergency medical travel insurance, exclusions and pre-existing conditions.

Travel insurance can help protect against certain unexpected costs while you are away, but coverage depends on the policy. Ontario residents should not assume their provincial health coverage or credit-card benefits will pay every bill outside the province or country. Review the wording before you travel.

1. Check emergency medical coverage

Confirm the coverage limit, eligible expenses, emergency assistance process and whether the destination or activities are covered. Medical bills abroad can be significant, and provincial coverage outside Canada is limited.

2. Understand pre-existing condition rules

Policies may have stability periods, exclusions or special conditions for pre-existing medical conditions. Read the exact definition and time period in your policy, and disclose information accurately when asked.

3. Review age, trip length and destination limits

Some plans have age limits, maximum trip durations or restrictions related to travel advisories and certain destinations. Confirm the dates and destination are accurately recorded.

4. Know what to do in an emergency

Save the insurer’s emergency assistance number and understand whether you must call before receiving treatment or arranging transportation. Keep policy details accessible while travelling.

5. Check trip cancellation and interruption separately

Emergency medical coverage does not necessarily include cancellation, interruption, baggage delay or lost luggage. Check which benefits you purchased and what reasons qualify for reimbursement.

6. Review workplace or credit-card coverage

Existing coverage may have eligibility conditions, trip-duration limits, exclusions or requirements to pay for travel with a particular card. Get the policy wording and confirm what applies to each traveller.

7. Buy before you need it

Coverage generally cannot be relied on for an event that has already occurred, and some benefits have waiting periods or special purchase deadlines. Ask questions early and keep your confirmation.
